A new report from England claims that the Tottenham board have already made up their mind about Ange Postecoglou’s future.
The Australian’s job has come under fire recently as Spurs have struggled in the league. Tottenham are 12th in the table and have won just one of their last six Premier League matches.
To make matters worse, Tottenham are also huge outsiders to qualify for European competition next season, according to the betting sites odds.
Job safe for now
Amid these rumours of Postecoglou being on the hot seat, The Daily Mail has reported that the 59-year-old’s job is safe. For now at least.
The report claims that the board maintains that ‘Big Ange’ is the right man for the job at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, that could change if league form does not turn around.
Tottenham have lost four of their last five matches and are nine points out of a top four spot.
EFL Cup and Europa League crucial
While improving the club’s league form is important, doing well in Tottenham’s remaining cup competitions is also reportedly crucial for Postecoglou as he fights for his job.
Spurs are still in the League Cup and the Europa League. The club’s last trophy came in the EFL Cup in 2008. Postecoglou also guaranteed that he would win a trophy this season. These competitions may be his only chances to live up to that promise.
Spurs will play the first match of a two-legged tie against Liverpool on January 8. The soccer betting sites have the Reds as clear favourites to advance. PlayUp gives Liverpool $1.75 chances of winning the first leg.
Tottenham’s chances in the Europa League are much higher though. Practically all betting sites in Australia have Spurs as the favourite to win the competition with $5.50 chances.
Injuries to blame
One of the biggest reasons that Postecoglou has been such a long lead by Tottenham’s board is the club’s current injury crisis.
The Lilywhites have been without both of their starting centre backs –Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven– since November. With Radu Drăgușin out injured, Postecoglou has had to rely on midfielder Archie Gray as left back.
Starting goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has also missed a significant chunk of the season.
Conclusion
With so many injured players, Postecoglou has called for reinforcements in January. It’s too early to say whether Daniel Levy will loosen the purse strings. If he doesn’t, Spurs could be looking for a new manager very soon.
