Spurs to trigger Son Heung-Min contract clause, extending deal to 2026

Tottenham to trigger Son Heung-Min contract extension clause to keep him at the club until 2026.

The biggest story of the offseason in the Premier League last summer was whether star striker Harry Kane would finally leave Tottenham. After a months long transfer saga of asking “Will he or won’t he,” Kane decided to leave. Spurs are hoping to avoid this fate again next summer and have decided to trigger Son Heung-Min’s contract extension clause. 

This move will see the club captain and Korean international’s contract extended through the 2025-2026 season.

Son in same position as Kane last season

Son Heung-Min currently has just two years left on his contract. If Tottenham were not to trigger Son’s contract extension clause, the 31-year-old forward would have just one year left in his contract this summer. This is the exact situation former Spurs captain Harry Kane was in last summer.

Last summer, Tottenham were forced to make a very difficult decision due to Harry Kane’s contract situation. Spurs could have decided to keep Kane at the club and lose him for nothing at the end of the year or sell him last summer. Spurs and their CEO Daniel Levy chose the latter option and sold Kane to Bayern Munich for nearly £90m ($172.3m AUD).

Spurs are reportedly desperate to avoid losing Son in the same way they lost Kane last summer. Triggering Son Heung-Min’s contract extension is a surefire way to avoid another Kane situation as they’ll keep him at the club for at least a few more years.

Contract extension clause secures Son until 2026

If Tottenham do trigger Son Heung-Min’s contract extension, as most recent reporting indicates, Son’s new contract will run through the 2025-26 season. 

If things go to plan and Son’s contract is extended, it could allow for a fairytale ending to Son’s illustrious career. The Korean international would be 34 years old in his last season with Tottenham, should he run out his contract. Son would go straight from Spurs to join the Korean national team at the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Son key to Ange Postecoglou

Son Heung-Min has been an integral part of Spurs’ newfound success under Australian manager Ange Postecoglou. The 31-year-old is now playing as a striker, and is scoring loads of goals doing it. Son has scored three goals in Tottenham’s first five games of the season. He is one of the most dangerous attackers in the league. 

Spurs currently sit second in the 2023/24 Premier League table. Most betting sites have them locked in as surefire favourites to qualify for the Champions League. 

With that being said, Tottenham will face their biggest challenge of the season thus far against Arsenal in the North London Derby on Sunday. A poor result here could potentially derail Spurs’ good start to the season. 

Whatever happens this weekend against Arsenal in the North London Derby, Son Heung-min is sure to play an important role.
