Round 5 was a weekend in two halves, with four thrilling games to kick things off each being decided by six points or less, and the last four all being decided by at least 20 points. Round 6 looks likely to see more of the latter, with lines of less than a single converted try in five of the eight games. With a host of teams trying to consolidate strong starts to the season and numerous others trying to turn around, there is plenty on the line across the weekend, and you can check out our NRL tips and predictions for every game below.

Dolphins vs Penrith Panthers
With so many evenly matched teams, this was never going to be an easy season to read, and the Dolphins’ win last week was a prime example. After losing their first four to firm into one of the Wooden Spoon favourites, they promptly went and pummelled a Titans team which had started the year really well, winning that one 36-10 in an impressive display. They’ll try to back that up at home against the four-time reigning Premiers, and what better time to do it after the Panthers suffered a fourth straight loss last weekend.
In what has been a disappointing start to the season that was arguably their worst result yet, losing to a struggling Cowboys team – and at home no less. But while things are not going as planned for Penrith, it is worth noting that the four losses that they have suffered in succession have been by a combined total of just 26 points. They could easily have picked up wins in at least a couple of those games, and with a couple of players set to return this Thursday night they can get a much-needed win in Brisbane.

St. George Illawarra Dragons vs Gold Coast Titans
The Dragons have been that close to having a brilliant start to the season, but instead they find themselves 2-3 a little over a month in. They’ve now suffered two one-point losses in three weeks after going down 23-22 against the Eels last weekend, though given the quality of their opposition and the fact that they led 20-8 well into the second half, they only have themselves to blame for the second of those.
The Titans also suffered a really disappointing loss in Round 5, though theirs was not a close one. After consecutive impressive big wins, they failed to show up against the winless Dolphins and ultimately went down 36-10 to take their record to 2-2. The gap between the best and their worst through the first month has been dramatic and makes them hard to predict, but given their performances over the fortnight prior to last weekend, they look like decent value as an underdog.
Predicted Squads
St. George Illawarra Dragons: 1. Clint Gutherson 2. Tyrell Sloan 3. Moses Suli 4. Valentine Holmes 5. Christian Tuipulotu 6. Kyle Flanagan 7. Lachlan Ilias 8. Toby Couchman 9. Damien Cook 10. Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters
How quickly things appear to have turned around for both of these teams. After a thoroughly disappointing 2024 campaign, the Broncos appear to have put last season in the rearview mirror and have looked every bit a contender in the early stages of this one. A dominant 46-24 win over a much-improved Tigers team took them to 4-1 and into 2nd spot, and they have a great chance to solidify a spot towards the top of the ladder against last year’s Preliminary Finalists.
The Roosters were always going to drop a little this season after losing so many players, and lo and behold they find themselves at 1-4 and sitting second last on the ladder. They did actually put in a decent showing last week and appeared set for a spirited win over their long-time rivals in the Rabbitohs, but two tries conceded in the last 15 minutes saw a 14-8 lead turn into a 14-20 loss. Their best has still been decent enough so far this season, but they haven’t been able to sustain it and against the Broncos in Brisbane, won’t likely be any match.
Predicted Squads
Brisbane Broncos: 1. Reece Walsh 2. Selwyn Cobbo 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Gehamat Shibasaki 5. Jesse Arthars 6. Ben Hunt 7. Adam Reynolds 8. Patrick Carrigan 9. Cory Paix 10. Payne Haas 11. Jack Gosiewski 12. Jaiyden Hunt 13. Kobe Hetherington 14. Billy Walters 15. Corey Jensen 16. Xavier Willison 17. Martin Taupau 18. Tyson Smoothy 19. Deine Mariner 20. Jock Madden 21. Ben Te Kura 22. Blake Mozer
Sydney Roosters: 1. James Tedesco 2. Daniel Tupou 3. Billy Smith 4. Robert Toia 5. Dom Young 6. Sandon Smith 7. Hugo Savala 8. Nat Butcher 9. Connor Watson 10. Naufahu Whyte 11. Angus Crichton 12. Siua Wong 13. Victor Radley 14. Zach Dockar-Clay 15. Salesi Foketi 16. Blake Steep 17. Spencer Leniu 18. Mark Nawaqanitawase 19. Taylor Losalu 20. Ethan King 21. Chad Townsend 22. Makahesi Makatoa
- Last time the Broncos and Roosters met earlier this season, the Broncos put up 50 points themselves, and the game easily covered the 50.5-point total set for this one.
- The Rabbitohs have been in winning form, but they haven’t been doing it easily, making the 1-12 margin look enticing for their game against the Cowboys.
- The Storm have won five of their last six games at AAMI Park, and four of those wins have been by at least 24 points.

Cronulla Sharks vs Manly Sea Eagles
The Sharks were just two minutes away from securing their third win of the season last weekend, leading the Raiders 20-18 entering the dying stages. But a 78th minute try to Sebastian Kris snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for the home team, condemning Cronulla to a second consecutive defeat after they were pumped by the Bulldogs at home a couple of weeks ago. But they return to Cronulla this weekend for a game that looks very winnable, at least if Manly’s performance last week was anything to go by.
Granted they were playing perhaps the best team in the league, but the Sea Eagles were still dreadful against the Storm, going down 48-14 before snagging a couple of late tries to make the scoreboard look a little more respectable. They now find themselves 3-2, but in a strange quirk they have yet to play a game that has been decided by less than 14 points – their average winning margin is 24 points, and their average losing margin 22 points. That looks likely to change this weekend in what should be a reasonably tight game. The Sea Eagles’ erratic form makes them hard to predict as well and they’re more than capable of winning this at their best, but at home, this looks like a good opportunity for the Sharks to bounce back.
Predicted Squads
Cronulla Sharks: 1. Will Kennedy 2. Samuel Stonestreet 3. Jesse Ramien 4. Mawene Hiroti 5. Ronaldo Mulitalo 6. Braydon Trindall 7. Nicho Hynes 8. Addin Fonua-Blake 9. Blayke Brailey 10. Manly Sea Eagles: 1. Lehi Hopoate 2. Jason Saab 3. Tolu Koula 4. Reuben Garrick 5. Clayton Faulalo 6. Luke Brooks 7. Daly Cherry-Evans 8. Josh Aloiai 9. Jazz Tevaga 10. Siosiua Taukeiaho 11. South Sydney Rabbitohs vs North Queensland Cowboys
The Rabbitohs’ strong start to the season continued last weekend, a come-from-behind win against the Roosters taking their record to 4-1 just a year after they started 2024 1-10. Wayne Bennett was always going to straighten them out a little, but even they must be surprised by their start to the season, and they have a great opportunity to make it even better when they host the Cowboys this weekend.
Having said that, the Cowboys have found something over the past fortnight after a disastrous first three weeks of the year. They got on the board against the Raiders a fortnight ago, and last weekend backed it up when they managed to hold off the Panthers in Penrith to win by four points. Interestingly, both of these teams have goal differences which belie their records – the Cowboys’ (-50) is the third worst in the league despite a 2-3 record, while the Bunnies are incredibly at just +4 despite losing only one game. Does that mean they are both worse than their records suggest? It certainly might, but regardless of how they’ve done it, both teams’ tails are high in the air. If the Cowboys play like last weekend they could win this, but at home, the Rabbitohs will be expecting to be too strong.
Predicted Squads
South Sydney Rabbitohs: 1. Jye Gray 2. Alex Johnston 3. Euan Aitken 4. Jack Wighton 5. Isaiah Tass 6. Latrell Mitchell 7. Jayden Sullivan 8. Sean Keppie 9. Peter Mamouzelos 10. Tevita Tatola 11. Keaon Koloamatangi 12. Jai Arrow 13. Lachlan Hubner 14. Liam Le Blanc 15. Siliva Havili 16. Tallis Duncan 17. Davvy Moale 18. Thomas Fletcher 19. Salesi Ataata 20. Fletcher Myers 21. Haizyn Mellars 22. Nazareth Taua
North Queensland Cowboys: 1. Scott Drinkwater 2. Robert Derby 3. Jaxon Purdue 4. Viliami Vailea 5. Murray Taulagi 6. Tom Dearden 7. Jake Clifford 8. Jordan McLean 9. Reece Robson 10. Jason Taumalolo 11. John Bateman 12. Kai O'Donnell 13. Reuben Cotter 14. Sam McIntyre 15. Jeremiah Nanai 16. Griffin Neame 17. Coen Hess 18. Harrison Edwards 19. Zac Laybutt 20. Thomas Duffy 21. Karl Lawton 22. Thomas Mikaele
Parramatta Eels vs Canberra Raiders
The Eels had a very bad first month of the season, losing every game relatively comfortably, and they appeared destined for more of the same against the Dragons last week. But after conceding a hefty lead, they fought back strongly late in the game and ultimately snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, an 83rd-minute field goal to Zac Lomax sealing the game for them after they ended the 80 minutes locked at 22-apiece.
The Raiders, meanwhile, were also on the right end of a close game a couple of days earlier. They did it in normal time, albeit only just, with a Sebastian Kris try in the last couple of minutes of the game being converted by Jamal Fogarty to give them a thrilling four-point win over the Sharks. That prevented a three-game losing streak for the boys from the nation’s capital, who surprisingly find themselves with a positive record at 3-2 and a great chance to make it 4-2 this weekend. Both these teams entered the season expected to be in the mix for last place, but while the Eels have well and truly justified that expectation, the Raiders have been pretty solid. They look well-placed to pick up another win here.
Predicted Squads
Parramatta Eels: 1. Isaiah Iongi 2. Josh Addo-Carr 3. Will Penisini 4. Sean Russell 5. Zac Lomax 6. Dylan Brown 7. Dean Hawkins 8. Joe Ofahengaue 9. Ryley Smith 10. Junior Paulo 11. Shaun Lane 12. Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors
This looks like one of the better games of the round, though it’s testament to just how dominant the Storm are at home that they enter it as massive 16.5-point favourites against a Warriors’ team that has won three of its first four. The Storm recovered from a really disappointing loss to the Dragons a fortnight ago to absolutely dominate the Sea Eagles in Manly last weekend, the 48-24 scoreline still not doing justice to just how much better they were. It was an ominous performance from the Premiership favourites, and now back on their home turf they will be eager to make another statement.
The Warriors, meanwhile, enjoyed a well-deserved week off last round following three consecutive wins against the Sea Eagles, Roosters and Tigers. But while the Sea Eagles are decent and Tigers are much improved, none of those teams are a patch on the Storm, particularly in Melbourne. This is New Zealand’s biggest test of the season, and while they certainly look a hell of a lot better than they did last year and will very possibly return to the finals in 2025, it’s hard to see them being a match for the Storm at AAMI Park.

Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers
The Knights’ strong start to the season which saw them win their first two games already feels like a lifetime ago, after two dreadful performances over the past fortnight. In their first loss of the season they went down 26-6 against the Titans, and they didn’t exactly bounce back from that performance as they failed to score in a 20-0 loss to the Bulldogs. They now face the Tigers for the second time already this season, but after those last two performances it’s easy to see the visitors evening the season ledger at 1-1.
The Tigers are not yet world beaters, but they are clearly a much better team than they have been for years even if they have lost their last two on the trot. Already they’ve picked up two wins for the year, both in impressive fashion, and a couple of weeks ago they were just two points away from knocking off the Warriors. They were no match for the Broncos last weekend, but nor should they be. This is a much more palatable match-up for this improving team, and it would be no surprise to see them get back on the winners’ list with a tight win to conclude the Round 6 action.

Newcastle Knights: 1. Kalyn Ponga 2. Kyle McCarthy 3. Dane Gagai 4. Bradman Best 5. Greg Marzhew 6. Fletcher Sharpe 7. Phoenix Crossland 8. Brodie Jones 9. Jayden Brailey 10. Leo Thompson 11.
