The third edition of Gather Round has come and gone, with Adelaide once again putting on a show for one of the AFL’s newest initiatives. On the field there weren’t actually all that many close games, though the Crows vs Cats clash on Thursday night was brilliant viewing as was the Bulldogs vs Lions game. Normal programming resumes in Round 6, with the round kicking off in Brisbane when the Lions host the Magpies, while other highlights come when the Crows host the Giants on Saturday afternoon, before the Cats face the Hawks in the traditional Easter Monday game. Check out our AFL tips and predictions for all nine games below.

Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood Magpies
The Lions and the Magpies have been two of the form teams of the competition early in the season, the solitary loss between the two of them combined coming when the Pies lost to the Giants convincingly in Opening Round. Since then, they have gone on to win four games on the trot in impressive fashion, beating each of the Power, Bulldogs, Blues and last weekend, the Swans. They look ready to return to Premiership contention after missing the finals last season, but have their biggest test of what has been a very difficult draw to start the season this Thursday night.
The Lions have not skipped a beat in their Premiership defence so far, picking up five wins from as many games to sit atop the AFL ladder as one of only two undefeated teams. That run looked set to end last weekend when they went down by a big margin to the Bulldogs, but they staged a hugely impressive comeback to ultimately win by 21 points with a second half that probably showcased that this is the best team in the competition when on their game. The Magpies will be able to give them a serious run for their money, but it is hard enough to tip against the Lions in any matchup in the league right now, let alone at home. Expect a quality game, but the home side should be too good.

North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Carlton Blues
The Kangaroos don’t get many Friday games, nor have they deserved them, but Good Friday is an exception. But while things appear to be turning around at Arden Street, they have not exactly set the world on fire the last few weeks after a competitive start to the year. They have been beaten comfortably in each of their last two games, first by 65 points to the Swans and then 62 points to the Suns. They’ll be eager to arrest that trend against a Blues team which has struggled mightily so far this season.
But finally, Carlton got their first win of the season last week, and it didn’t come a moment too soon. Four straight losses to start the year has put their finals hopes in jeopardy already, but things can change pretty quickly and after a dominant win over the Eagles, if they can get another over the Kangaroos they will all of a sudden find themselves at 2-4 and potentially with a much-needed injection of confidence. The Roos are certainly improved this season and have reason to be optimistic about their future, but they are still some way off the pace, and for all of Carlton’s woes this season so far they are the much better team and should win this game comfortably.

West Coast Eagles vs Essendon Bombers
In the second game of a rare Friday night double-header, the Eagles will attempt to get their first win of the season against the Bombers. Based on what they have dished up so far this season, however, it’s hard to see that happening. Andrew McQualter was always destined to have a rough initiation to life as an AFL head coach, and that is exactly how it’s played out with five consecutive losses and a percentage of 49. 7% just over a month into the season.
The Bombers didn’t exactly start the season well themselves, but they have bounced back over the past fortnight with two much-needed victories. Their Gather Round defeat of the Dees was perhaps as much a blight on their opposition as it was impressive on their part, but nonetheless they proved that all is not entirely lost for this team, even if their path forward is not exactly clear. The Bombers still probably need some form of list overhaul to get anywhere significant, but they are a hell of a lot better than the Eagles and shouldn’t have any problems winning this one.

Melbourne Demons vs Fremantle Dockers
With the Blues having picked up a win last weekend, the pressure on the Demons has only grown. They are now the only winless team in the league alongside the Eagles, and were again pretty woeful against the Bombers last week. They kicked just 57 points after booting 46 the week after, and generally look incapable of putting any sort of scoreboard pressure on their opponents with both a lack of forward targets, and a lack of any obvious system moving the ball.
The Dockers, in contrast, are firing on all cylinders after three consecutive wins which followed two losses to start the season. Two of those came against the Eagles and Tigers, but their win in the middle against the Dogs was impressive while they also showed what they are capable of in a dominant second half against Richmond last weekend. They are a good, well-rounded team and have certainly added some offensive flair to a well-established defensive identity, and should be able to restrict a struggling Melbourne team to another low score and pick up a comfortable win.

Adelaide Crows vs Greater Western Sydney Giants
This might just be the game of the round. The Crows might have slumped a little after three consecutive wins to start the season with losses in their last two games, but they have not exactly been disgraced in either of those. After a controversial one-point defeat to the Suns a fortnight ago, they were brilliant in the first half against the Cats last week only to be overrun in the first half. Defensively they will concede a few runs this year, but they are as exciting a team with ball in hand as any in the league and should put on another fantastic show against another team with plenty of flair.
The Giants were really impressive last weekend, overcoming a solid Saints outfit to win their fourth game out of five this season, their only loss coming by 12 points to the Hawks. At their best they look like a team that could very easily challenge for the Premiership, with high-level talent littered all over the field. This will be a brilliant game which could easily go either way, but the Crows will be desperate to put together a four-quarter performance after fading last week. In a high-scoring and close game, they might just be able to close things out a little better than they did against the Cats and eke out a tight win.

Richmond Tigers vs Gold Coast Suns
It was never going to be a particularly successful season for the Tigers, but already they have shown some signs that their fans should be excited about. Once again last week they failed to play out four quarters, but that is to be expected from such a young team and what they showed in the first half once again highlighted that there is some good talent on this developing list. They’ve had their time in the sun under Damian Hardwick, who is now attempting to lead the Suns to the Promised Land which he for so long occupied with the Tigers.
Hardwick’s second team has started the year brilliantly with four wins in as many games, and finals now look like the absolute minimum for the team which has somehow not yet managed to ever make them. They have been given a really easy draw to start the season by the AFL, with three of the four teams they’ve beaten so far having combined for just one win in the Eagles, Demons and last week the Kangaroos. But alas, they have pumped those teams and against another bottom feeder in Richmond, should be able to win relatively comfortably.
Predicted Squads

Sydney Swans vs Port Adelaide Power
After two consecutive wins, the Swans dropped a third game for the season last weekend. After keeping pace with the Magpies for over a half, they fell away to ultimately lose pretty comfortably, going down by 31 points to fall to 2-3. But this is still an excellent team on its day, and with a few pivotal players to come back all is far from lost for last year’s Grand Finalists. Back on their home turf this weekend, they will be expecting to pick up a win against the Power.
But in complete contrast to Sydney, Port Adelaide bounced back from two consecutive losses last weekend to hand the Hawks their first defeat of the season during Gather Round. The Power were absolutely brilliant to start the game and open up a seemingly unassailable lead, and while the Hawks gave them a fright in the second half, the home side steadied to win by 30 points. That was their best performance of the season, but the Power away from home are typically a different story. If they play like they did at Adelaide Oval last weekend this could be a great game, but at the SCG the Swannies should be too strong.

Western Bulldogs vs St. Kilda Saints
The Bulldogs might have fallen to 2-3 with a loss to the Lions last weekend, but they should not have lost any fans. They will be hugely disappointed to have wilted like they did in the second half, but this team has still not lost by more than that 21-point margin which Brisbane beat them by all season, and that has been without a number of their best players. The Bulldogs now have an elite pair of key position players in Sam Darcy and Rory Lobb at either end of the ground to complement their excellent midfield, and when Bontempelli and Treloar return (the former potentially this weekend) this will be a team to be reckoned with.
The Saints, meanwhile, have also impressed after a disappointing Round 1, and though they went down relatively comfortably to the Giants last weekend they were by no means disgraced. This is not a Premiership contender, but they have shown that they are capable of playing some good footy on their day so far this season and could put in a competitive showing in this game. But the Dogs have been better than their 2-3 record to date would suggest this season, and in a free-flowing game should be able to pick up a third win of the year.

Geelong Cats vs Hawthorn Hawks
The Easter Monday clash between the Cats and the Hawks has dished up some brilliant games over the years, and this could well be another one of them. The Cats have once again seemingly turned over their list without really dropping out of contention, and were last week fantastic when overcoming a scintillating first half from the Crows to win by 19 points. After yet another top-four finish last season, they should be right in the mix again this year, and a win against the Hawks would be further testament to that.
The exciting young Hawks suffered their first loss of the season last year, looking like a completely different team to what they had been for the first month of the season in a dreadful first half against the Power. In the second, however, they absolutely turned it off, though it did ultimately prove too little too late. Young they may be, but despite that loss the Hawks are every bit a Premiership contender this year, and this will be a great test for them against a fellow top-four candidate with a lot more experience around the ground. It would be no surprise to see this game enter the annals of history as yet another thrilling Easter Monday clash, but the Cats, with their experienced stars like Patrick Dangerfield and Jeremy Cameron leading the way, might just be able to sneak over the line.
