The US Open announced on Friday that Australian fan favourite Nick Kyrgios had withdrawn from the season’s final Grand Slam in New York. Due to injuries, Kyrgios will have now missed all four Grand Slams of the season coming off what was the best year of his career.
Kyrgios Withdraws from the US Open
Nick Kyrgios has officially withdrawn from the US Open taking place between August 29th and September 10th.
In the early hours of Friday morning, the US Open announced on various social media platforms that Kyrgios was not going to be taking part in the festivities in Flushing Meadows.
The announcement, though not unexpected given the injury plagued season Kyrgios has had, is still a crushing blow to tennis fans everywhere.
Whether he is winning or losing, Kyrgios is always entertaining to watch. And when we last saw him healthy, he was doing a lot more winning than losing.
Kyrgios experienced the best US Open result of his career last season reaching the quarterfinals and defeating top seeded Daniil Medvedev in the process.
Unfortunately, he will now officially be unable to defend his quarterfinal berth as he will see more ranking points go by the wayside.
Having been ranked as high as 19th in the world back in February coming off his most successful season to date, Kyrgios now sits at 92nd as injuries have stolen the season from him.
Following the US Open, he is almost certain to fall out of the top 100.
When he does return to health, Kyrgios will be able to take part in the biggest tournaments around the world thanks to his protected ranking of 21.
Though his official ranking is 92, protected rankings are given to players who have missed more than six months of tennis due to injury and can be used for entry into their next nine tournaments or the next nine months.
With Kyrgios out of the US Open, his attention will likely turn to an offseason of training and getting healthy to be back to his best next year.
Injuries Have now Claimed His Whole Season
The whole 2023 season has been a massive disappointment for Kyrgios after 2022 saw him experience so much success.
2022 was the best year of Kyrgios’ career when it comes to Grand Slams. He won the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open with fellow countryman and good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis, made the finals at Wimbledon, and achieved a career best quarterfinal finish at the US Open.
The massively talented Aussie seemed as though he had finally found the balance in his life between having fun and taking tennis seriously.
Bettors who had backed Kyrgios at Australian betting apps for the majors this year will have their tickets voided.
Looking to build on last year, expectations for Kyrgios were high coming into this season.
However, he suffered a knee injury in October at the Japan Open which forced him out of both the Australian and French Open as he recovered from surgery.
He announced that he would return for Wimbledon but suffered a torn ligament in his wrist at a warm-up event in Stuttgart which saw him lose to Yibing Wu of China. This forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon just a day before the tournament began and has kept him off the court ever since.
That one match in Stuttgart is the only singles match Kyrgios has played all year.
He is now set to miss all four Grand Slams of the season in unfortunate circumstances considering 2022 was the best year of his career on the court, and he finally seemed to have found peace with the game of tennis.
Australia’s Nick Kyrgios had big goals for the 2023 ATP season as he looked to grow from his career best year in 2022. Unfortunately, his body had different ideas as injuries have now forced him to miss all four Grand Slams and limited him to just one singles match on the season.
