Saturday Racing Tips Caulfield 22/02/25

Three Group 1 races along with a pair of Group 2 and a couple of Group 3 makes for a very strong card at Caulfield on Saturday. There is plenty of quality there and that should make for a busy day on the betting sites.

Caulfield Race 6 - Catanach’s Jewellers Mannerism Stakes (1400m)

BEST BET - #6 Coeur Volante - (BEST BET)
Below par in her first run of this prep in the Group 3 Bellmaine. She is kept to that same level here and tends to come on plenty for her second start. Her record so far is only one win from four runs first up and two wins from three when second up. That suggests that improvement is going to be coming here. The only time that she has been seen over this track and distance in the past has seen her salute and connections try her in blinkers for the first time. That might sharpen her up enough to get her head in front.

THE DANGER - #4 Semana
Back down to an easier level after finishing fifth in the Group 1 Orr Stakes last time out. She was beaten six lengths but that was still a rock-solid effort and suggests that this track and distance is fine for her. She was a winner the only other time that she has run in Group 3 company and has spent most of her last year taking on better rivals than these. That is why she has not got her head in front for more than a year and although she has wins on good ground, slightly softer would be ideal.

VALUE BET - #2 Grinzinger Belle
Showed a good level of form when she was sent to the front in the spring. She won over this trip of 1400m first up but that was on a Heavy 9 track and was raced over further distances after that. This is her first start of this prep, winning twice from four first-up starts with a second-place finish in another one of those. Damian Lane has ridden her all four times that she has saluted from seven starts togethre so she has to be given plenty of respect in this contest if she can get across from a wide barrier early to take the lead.

Caulfield Race 7 - Lamaro Hotel’s Futurity Stakes (1400m)

BEST BET - #2 I Wish I Win
A fascinating contest here with the ground as quick as he would like it. He has failed to find the frame just once in eight career starts when first-up, winning three of them. Fresh is clearly no problem for him and 1400m is probably going to be a more suitable starting point for him these days than running in an all-out sprint. He was flat in the Everest when last seen but he has been given plenty of time to get over any issues coming out of that race. Has a win and a third in two runs over this track and distance and should be hard to keep out of the frame again.

THE DANGER - #1 Mr Brightside
Has plenty of strong runs first up so his opening effort this season was a touch uninspiring when beaten in the Orr Stakes by Another Wil. That was the first Group 1 success for that rival, just looking to be done for a turn of foot on that occasion. It is a touch surprising that he has not found a 1600m contest for this second start of the prep, especially with his main danger being a naturally speedier horse than he is. Has the worst of the barrier draw to overcome in 11 to get himself tracking the speed and he might once more just find another with a better finish.

VALUE BET - #5 Light Infantry Man
Produced by far his best effort in Australia when saluting in the Northerly at Ascot when he was last seen. That is an 1800m contest but he was on the speed throughout and should be able to help to make this into a fair enough test at the trip. Had plenty of Group 1 form when he was trained in England so it could be interesting if he can find that same level of consistency now that he has got his head in front here. His record when fresh is not outstanding but he produced his career-best run the only time that Ethan Brown has ridden him in the past.

Caulfield Race 9 - Sportsbet Oakleigh Plate (1100m)

BEST BET - #2 Estriella - (BEST BET)
Has two wins from three runs when she is first-up. The only defeat came when fourth in the Moir Stakes back in September. Barrier eight was no help to her in a nine-runner field over 1000m around Moonee Valley but she was only beaten 0.81l at the line. She should be able to get over from barrier nine here relatively easily given there is not a lot of pace pressure to her inside. The speed angles are all drawn outside her so she should be able to make them use up extra energy early. This looks like her best chance so far to show that she is a genuine Group 1 performer.

THE DANGER - #15 She’s Bulletproof
This is by quite some margin the toughest race that she has run in so far. It comes off the back of her win in the Group 3 Bellmaine where she came 2.75l clear. Visually, that was a superb run and one that suggests that she is going to be more than capable now that she is pitched into Group 1 company. Runner-up the only time that she has raced at this track and she has been placed both times that she has raced over this distance so she should be in the mix.

VALUE BET - #1 I Am Me
Has an exceptional record when first-up so far in her career. In six starts, she has four wins and a pair of third-place finishes. She is generally ridden just off the speed so she should be able to find a solid early position from barrier two. There is not a lot of pace on the inside in the early stages so she can have this run to suit her. She boasts 11 wins in 25 career starts which is a sensational record but she is 0/7 so far when she has raced at Group 1 level. That has to sound a note of caution for all that this is not the strongest Group 1 that she will have run in.
