Saturday Racing Tips Randwick 19/04/25

It is another smart card at Randwick on Saturday afternoon with another string of Group class races to get stuck into. Our tips include a selection in one of the two Group 1 races on the afternoon as well as a $13 roughie to take on the betting sites with. That is in a Group 3 contest about halfway through the afternoon.

Randwick Race 3 - Toyota Forklifts Frank Packer Plate (2000m)

BEST BET - #1 Swiftalcon
Has not managed to get his head in front so far this season, placed on all four of his starts to this point. Two of them were Guineas at this track and at Rosehill, one was a Group 2 and the other was in this Group 3 class. The drop back from 2000m at Rosehill to 1600m last time looked a negative to him, so better should be coming now that he is back up in distance. He meets nothing of the class of that winner Evaporate here and can gain a deserved win for all of his consistency.

DANGER - #2 Firm Agreement
Has only managed to get his head in front once so far in his career but he was runner-up in the ATC Derby at this track on his most recent start. That level of form is as good as anything in the field but it was over a longer distance of 2400m and he was more than five lengths off the winner at the line. His run over this distance the time before saw him doing some good work late but that was on a Heavy 8 surface. That put more emphasis on stamina than this will which could see him as a frame filler for all that there could be a good pace on here.

VALUE BET - #3 Plymouth
Made the running in the ATC Derby last time out when fading out of things late on. Perhaps his stamina gave out on him, that was the impression anyway, so he should be well suited to this drop back to 2000m. He has the widest barrier in 10 to start which is not the perfect position for him as a front-runner and he is going to face some challengers for the pace as well. As such, it seems more likely that he is going to find at least one or two too strong but he is a solid type nonetheless.

Randwick Race 6 - Myplates JRA Plate (2000m)

BEST BET - #3 Encap
A hard horse to catch right, he has only managed to get his head in front twice so far in his career. He has more than held his own at a strong level, however, including when rattling home to finish third in the Group 1 Doncaster last time out. He is yet to run over 2000m but the impression that he gives is that it could be a help to him, as long as he gets settled early enough in the contest. Drops back into a Group 3 contest here which should be another plus so a third win might be around the corner from him.

DANGER - #4 Klondike
Makes his first start since leaving the stable of William Haggas, so it will be interesting to see what the betting makes of him. He was a Group 3 winner in France over 2400m last August which sees him arrive with a lofty rating. The way that most races over that distance are run in France are sit and sprint so the drop to 2000m is probably not going to be a negative to him, especially not on when first up. We all know the strength of the European runners at this sort of distance so he has to be given a huge amount of respect.

VALUE BET - #5 Palmetto
Has plenty of experience on his side so it is interesting that connections are fitting a visor on him for the first time for this contest. Something different could be what he needs to spark him on to another success after a smart Canberra Cup win two starts back. He had three wins on heavy ground when he was younger but he didn’t look in love with that surface the last time he was seen in action. It might be that better ground is what he wants these days which he should get here. Even still, he was less than a length and a half behind the winner Ceolwulf which is a strong level to bring to this Group 3 contest.

Randwick Race 8 - Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m)

BEST BET - #2 Briasa
One of the biggest improvers this season, he has won seven of his nine career starts, including when making the breakthrough in Group 1 company last time out in the T J Smith. He shapes as if he is capable of making further progression now that he steps up to 1400m after that 1200m success where he was at his strongest at the line. He saluted in a Group 2 in the spring over 1300m at Newcastle so he has shown that he can stay a little further than 1200m and he looks a stronger horse now than then so this looks a great fit.

DANGER - #14 Broadsiding
A very smart performer with four Group 1 wins already to his credit. The most recent of those came over 2000m in the Rosehill Guineas, a distance that he ran well over in the Cox Plate as well in the spring. He has three wins in four starts over this distance of 1400m but he might just find it a touch on the short side, especially now that he is not taking on his own age group. Is absolutely a class act so it would not be a shock to see him saluting again here but he might just find something like the selection to be too fleet of foot for him.

VALUE BET - #1 Antino
Has an exceptional record when he is first up, winning four of his six starts when he has been fresh so far in his career. He ran in a Hong Kong Group 1 the last time that he raced back in December, splitting Mr Brightside and Fangirl on his last Australian outing a month prior to that. 1600m suits him better than 1400m does but he ran well enough in the Memsie on the first start of his last prep to want to include him here despite this being on the short side for him.
