Saturday Racing Tips Caulfield 08/02/25

The C F Orr Stakes is the Group 1 feature on Saturday’s card at Caulfield. That will be the focus of many on the betting sites. There are six other group races on the card, however, with three Group 2 and three Group 3 to enjoy as well. Those include the Blue Diamond Prelude contests for the two-year-old generation. It is an excellent afternoon in prospect to welcome racing back to Caulfield with a string of quality performers all set to grace the turf.

BEST BET - #2 Maharba
Last seen at Ascot at the end of November when chasing home Overpass in the Group 1 Winterbottom. He had beaten the re-opposing Rey Magnerio prior to that at Flemington in a Group 3 contest. There is a win when fresh on his record which will give his supporters some hope here, with underfoot conditions ideal for him. Is a rock-solid performer who should run his race once more.

THE DANGER - #1 Airman
Winner of the Group 2 Premiere back in October at Randwick. Behind him that day were Bella Nipotina and Giga Kick amongst others, so it is a very strong line of form. He was disappointing on his final start of his last prep but he missed the heart of the spring carnival which suggests something was amiss. Has three wins and two third-place runs from six starts when he has been first-up in his career. If he resumes close to his peak, he is a big player.

VALUE BET - #10 Miss Aria
1100m is probably a little on the short side for her these days but the level of opposition she has been taking on suggests the bookmakers have got her priced too big. She has two wins from four runs when she has been first-up so fresh is fine for her. Four starts at this track have yielded a win and three placed runs and two prior efforts in Group 2 races have seen her finish second and third. The second saw her split Revolutionary Miss and Skybird in October, a solid line of form.

Caulfield Race 7 - Highland Race Colours Autumn Stakes (1400m)

BEST BET - #1 Evaporate
Things went badly wrong for him in the Cox Plate when he was last seen in race action. He was trapped wide and too keen over 2000m that day, giving himself no chance of making any impact late on. Was in front of Detroit City in the Stutt Stakes at The Valley in September then beat Angel Capital in the Caulfield Guineas in October. That pair looks like his biggest dangers on paper here. His record fresh is a second from two starts but his formlines over these make him the one they have to beat.

THE DANGER - #2 Angel Capital
Things didn’t really go his way in the Caulfield Guineas last time out. A tardy exit from the barriers didn’t help him and he then was forced widest of all as the field turned into the straight. From there, he was never going to be in with much of a chance of doing himself justice for all that he managed to finish sixth. He is a perfect 2/2 when fresh so the fact that he has not raced since October is a positive for him. Looks to have strong claims of getting involved at the business end here if things work out a little bit kinder for him in the run.

VALUE BET - #4 Detroit City
Won his first two career starts before a slow pace was against him at Flemington and then he was a solid four-length fourth at The Valley behind Evaporate. The drop back from 1600m to 1400m should not be an issue for him and the blinkers experiment has been ended after not gaining any improvement from him. Is one of those in here with the fewest miles on the clock which could mean that there is going to be a touch more progression from him than some of the others. That should give him a place chance.

BEST BET - #1 Mr Brightside - (BEST BET)
A star of the sport, he has eight Group 1 wins to his credit so far in his career, winning 18 of his 40 races. He was the winner of this race last year and has won five of his nine starts at this track, second in three others. His record fresh can be a touch inconsistent, winning three of his eight runs when he was first up in his career. At Caulfield, however, he has won three of the four times that he has run at the track when he has been first up. This would not be the deepest field that he has taken on in a Group 1 and is expected to make a winning return.

THE DANGER - #5 Another Wil
The five-year-old continues to get better, now the winner of eight of his 13 career runs. He is yet to make a breakthrough at this highest level, finishing runner-up in the Rupert Clarke back in November as close as he has got. That is over this same 1400m track and distance so there is an obvious chance that he is going to be competitive here once more. His record at Caulfield is a win on his only two prior visits ahead of that second and he has four wins and two second-place runs in six when he has raced over this distance. All of that adds up to him being a very hard horse to keep out of the places.

VALUE BET - #10 Private Life
The only three-year-old in the contest, he has won three of his first six career starts. One of those victories was the Caulfield Guineas back in October. A bold showing two races earlier from those who were behind him on that occasion would be a timely boost to his form. The drop back down to 1200m was not in his favour when he was fifth in the Darley Champions Sprint. He was far from disgraced but taking on genuine sprinters like Sunshine In Paris and Bella Nipotina was too tough for him. He kept on in the latter stages, however, and should do better now that he is back over a more suitable distance.

Jockey Of The Day – Jamie Melham

Three weeks after marrying fellow jockey Ben Melham, there is a strong chance of some Saturday group race winners for Jamie. There will be some multiples placed with the horse racing bookmakers on some well-fancied mounts.

As a side note, New York Lustre for trainer Enver Jusufovic was both the last winner she rode under her maiden name of Kah as well as her first as Melham.
