Saturday Racing Tips Sandown Lakeside 01/02/25

This is meant to be a Caulfield meeting but after the recent fire, the card is at Sandown. It is not often that we put up our horse racing tips from Sandown so it is going to be a nice change of pace this weekend. We have three selections on the card, including a roughie whose record when first up suggests that the betting sites might have her too big.

BEST BET - #7 New York Lustre - (BEST BET)
It is very hard to know just how good this mare could be. She’s only had six starts so far, winning the last three of them. Two of those have been this season and while they are not races that match up to this one in terms of class and depth, the visual impression that she has made means that she has to be supported again. Each of her two recent wins have been done in smart times for the grade. That suggests that she is going to be capable of making the step into better company. Back up to 1200m could help her as well.

THE DANGER - #5 Material Dreams
Has been given some tough tasks through her career, running eight of her 15 races in black type contests. She is 4/7 when she is not at that level. Fresh has seen her perform well in the past so it was no surprise to see her put in a big run at Flemington two weeks ago in her opening run of this prep. There is a win on her card when she is on her second start of a prep and she was a winner the only time that she has run at this track. Went forward in a couple of trial wins but was held up last time. It will be interesting to see how she is ridden here in a small field.

VALUE BET - #1 It’s Business Time
November 2023 was the last time that she was seen in a race. She has been given plenty of jumpouts and she has been strong in the early stages of the market. It suggests that she should be ready to do herself justice despite the long absence, a winner first up in the past. Her last race was when she was runner-up in a Group 3 at Riccarton. Six wins and three places in her 10 career starts to this point, she looks the type that is going to be hard to keep out of the frame once more.

BEST BET - #6 Revelare - (BEST BET)
Finished fourth on his debut last June. Since that time he has three wins and a second in four starts. Won over 1600m at this track last time out, despite the pace being a crawl. He had to dig deep that day in a race that turned into a sprint which wasn’t a help to him. Up to 1800m for the first time should though, as he was strong at the line over 1600m at Seymour two starts back. This is a stronger level of race for him but he strikes as the type to still have better to come, especially if this is run at a better tempo.

THE DANGER - #8 Blushing Tycoon
Far from a regular winner but he has plenty of runs in the frame that suggest that he finds a way to get himself involved. Like the selection, he would be helped by a decent pace at this distance, something that he had to do for himself when he was second at Flemington two starts back. He was in front of Et Tu Brute that day, a line of form that looks worth following into this race. Craig Williams has ridden him on his last two starts. They are starting to form an understanding of one another and from a draw in barrier three, he is well drawn to attack early if that is the plan.

VALUE BET - #10 Et Tu Brute
As mentioned, he was behind Blushing Tycoon in a race over this 1800m distance at Flemington two starts back when Blushing Tycoon was second. The positions were the same last time but this gelding was found to be lame post race. That makes it a very easy run to put a line through for him and give him another chance. He has blinkers put back on here in a bid to try and get a little bit more out of him. Has an inside barrier and should be able to put himself in a nice stalking position early on.

Sandown Lakeside Race 9 - Lamaro’s Hotel Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m)

BEST BET - #9 She’s Bulletproof
Ran well at Geelong when second in a Listed race on her first start of this prep. Is yet to win in three starts when she is fresh but she has two wins and a second when she is making her second start. That stands out here on her second run, especially as the second start of her last prep saw her win by six lengths at The Valley. Was runner-up in a Group 3 after that so is more than capable at this level and is going to be a very hard mare to keep out of the money.

THE DANGER - #3 Fancify
Is building a strong resume, winning seven of her 13 career starts. She has been partnered twice by Joe Bowditch, winning both of them. That includes a Group 3 win at Flemington in November when she was last seen in a race. She went from the front that day over 1400m which would make sense dropping back to 1200m here. Has not had any sort of trial or jumpout since that Flemington win but she has three wins in four starts when she is first up so that should not put anyone off backing her.

VALUE BET - #1 Quintessa
Did not run well when behind Fancify in that Flemington Group 3 last time out but she was slow into stride and ended up a long way out of her ground in a race where the first four past the post were pretty much in those positions throughout. Trying to come from an early position in 14th of the 14 runners was an impossible task. She enjoys quick ground which she will get here and she has three wins when on her first start of a prep from four starts. She finished second in the other!
