It was 2002 since the United States held both the men’s and women’s singles titles. Back when Pete Sampras and Serena Williams won their respective tournaments. With all of the USA Top 10 seeds remaining in the draw, they have every chance to match history.
Americans are certainly impressive with plenty of athletes remaining

Pegula battles through against Elina Svitolina
History To Be Made?
News Insights
- 2002 - last time since Americans won both titles
- All USA Top 10 seeds remain in the draw
- Keys vs Pegula & Shelton vs Paul are the All-American affairs
- All of the Americans will be battling for a maiden grand slam
Some big names have dropped out of the tournament early such as Holger Rune, Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Leaving hope for some of the tournament outsiders, unfortunately for the hopefuls, the dominant Swiatek, Djokovic and Alcaraz remain strong hoping for a place in the final. It will be tricky for the home representatives to break down the big favourites but the Flushing Meadows crowd will be behind them all the way.
Fritz On Fire!
Alongside Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz was a strong hope to go deep into the tournament. He has lived up to expectations thus far, with a favourable draw in the run up to a potential clash against Novak Djokovic. They do not come any harder than that, unfortunately for Fritz! An incredible stat - Fritz has dropped no more than 5 games in each of his first 3 matches (he is 54-13 in games for the tournament).
New Kid On the Block
The conveyor belt of young players from the United States is continuing to produce world-class players, the next hopeful in the WTA tour is Peyton Stearns. She also has won all 3 of her matches in straight sets. Beating British hopeful, Katie Boulter, in the third round. She will face the Wimbledon champion, Vondrousova, who has also shown great form again in the US Open with plenty of confidence behind her. This will be a true test of Peyton Stearns to judge if she is the real deal yet.
Who has the best chance?
On the men’s side, I would certainly look at Tiafoe as he can avoid Djokovic/Alcaraz until later on in the tournament. Tiafoe is a big crowd favourite and has gone about his business successfully so far in New York. I expect him to come through the next round and contest against fellow countrymen, Paul and Shelton. Pegula has to be fancied on the women’s draw, she is looking closer and closer to being a grand slam winner, I believe eventually she will get there in Melbourne or New York.
